Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower is located on the west side of Shinjuku. Jer and I walked past it one night on the way to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. As you can see, it has a very striking design. The fisheye lens makes it look positively geodesic. Tokyo, Japan. 2008.

I handheld this shot so it’s not as sharp as it should be, but I wanted to share it because it’s a great example of the beautiful sunsets we have here. West Seattle looking back towards downtown Seattle, WA. 2008.

This is a row of machines where you can purchase tickets at Shinjuku Station. Notice the map at the top of the frame, which you’re supposed to use to figure out the fare. If you don’t want to take the time to figure it out — or it’s too complicated — you can always buy the lowest priced ticket and then use a Fare Adjustment Machine at the end of your trip to pay the difference. I usually cheated and looked up my fares ahead of time on The Tokyo Transfer Guide Web site. Tokyo, Japan, August 2008.

Another photo from the vault, but this one is only from a few months ago. This is the view from my apartment, boats on Elliott Bay at sunrise. I handheld this shot because it was early and I didn’t feel like setting up the tripod. Also, I used my 80-200mm lens.

This picture is from last winter. It was snowing outside, which happens rarely here, the heater was running and the Christmas lights were blinking.
I don’t mind the cold if I’m inside and bundled up. Plus I’ve only seen snow falling from the sky a handful of times so it’s still pretty exciting.

I haven’t taken many pictures this fall, so here’s one of my favorites from last year that I never posted. I took it in the park across the street from where I live. A circular polarizer gives the blue sky extra punch.
I love this season.

I was at the park playing with the long lens I’d borrowed from school when I caught this scene. I liked how the boy patiently waited for the man (his father? the coach?) to finish adjusting his uniform.

Around 2002, I practiced “freezing the action shots” on a dog agility class in Santa Barbara, CA. This is one of the best shots — and one of the first pictures I ever sold.
